The final event of the 2007 season will begin on Tuesday in Madrid. The WTA Tour Championships features the 8 best players of 2007 and is the biggest event after the 4 Grand Slams.
Maria qualified for this event on Sunday. The other players who are playing are:

Svetlana Kuznetsova
Jelena Jankovic
Ana Ivanovic
Serena Williams
Anna Chakvetadze
Daniela Hantuchova
Maria said this about competing in Madrid: "This has been a very frustrating year for me physically and I'm really disappointed that I haven't been able to compete as much as I would like. But I'm a big competitor and after resting my shoulder for a few weeks I'm determined to compete at the Sony Ericsson Championships."
The draw for the 2 groups will be made at the weekend and the 8 players will be split into 2 groups and compete in a round-robin format. Each player will play every player in the group once and the top 2 in each group will advance to the semis. Maria will play 3 matches between Tuesday and Friday. The semis are played on Saturday and the final on Sunday.
Maria won this event 2 years ago and reached the semis the last 2 years - both years she lost to the eventual champion.
