South Florida at the plate: Leadoff man Mike Consolmagno notched the Bulls' first hit of the afternoon, shooting a line-drive single to center field starting the fourth inning. New York hurlers had retired the first nine hitters of the game. South Florida got on the board in the top of the sixth inning, when Eric Baumann hit a grand slam off Kei Igawa.
Yankees at the plate: Alex Rodriguez drove in a first-inning run with a sacrifice fly and ripped a two-run single in the second, staking New York to a 5-0 lead. Jorge Posada legged out a two-run triple off the right-field wall in the fourth inning and doubled earlier. Derek Jeter and Shelley Duncan stroked RBI singles, and Melky Cabrera also contributed a sacrifice fly for the Yankees.
South Florida on the mound: Shawn Sanford allowed Rodriguez's sacrifice fly in the first inning, and New York batted around against Zach Pietrzyk in the second, scoring four runs. Freshman right-hander Matt Stull made his collegiate debut with a scoreless third inning before allowing four runs (two earned) in the fourth.
Yankees on the mound: Joba Chamberlain showcased his fastball and dropped in a few curveballs, throwing two scoreless, hitless innings, striking out two batters in the second inning. Chamberlain threw 22 pitches, 15 for strikes. Ian Kennedy, working on his offspeed offerings, allowed just a single over two scoreless innings, striking out two. Phil Hughes threw a 1-2-3 fifth inning, striking out two. Igawa followed Hughes with one inning and ended the Yankees' run of scoreless pitching, walking two and surrendering Baumann's grand slam.
Up next: The Yankees will face their first Major League club of the spring on Saturday, visiting the Phillies in Clearwater, Fla. Right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (19-7, 3.70 ERA in 2007) makes his '08 debut for the Yankees, and he is scheduled to pitch two innings. Darrell Rasner, Chris Britton, Jonathan Albaladejo, Heath Phillips, Dan Giese and Ross Ohlendorf are also scheduled to work.
The Phillies will start right-hander Adam Eaton (10-10, 6.29 ERA in 2007), with first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. ET.
