Pettitte to start on DL

Pettitte to Start Season on Disabled List

New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte will open the regular season on the disabled list, though manager Joe Girardi said Pettitte might be able to make his first start next week in the team's fifth game. Pettitte, a 35-year-old left-hander, has been bothered by back problems during spring training. If Pettitte is able to pitch effectively in a minor-league game tomorrow in Tampa, Florida, Girardi said he expects Pettitte would start on April 5 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and not miss his spot in the rotation. Pettitte has 201 wins over his 13-year Major League Baseball career, which includes 10 seasons with the Yankees. He went 15-9 with a 4.05 earned run average last season. The Yankees set their 25-man regular-season roster yesterday by sending six players down to the minors. Pitchers Scott Patterson, Darrell Rasner, Jose Veras, Edwar Ramirez and Kei Igawa were demoted, as was second baseman Nick Green.
