Beckett (0-1)

Pitching matchup
NYY: RHP Mike Mussina (1-1, 3.09 ERA)
Mussina featured a sharp curveball against the Rays on Monday, which helped him pitch to his capabilities in a rout at Yankee Stadium. He has now pitched well for two straight outings, and with a bit more offensive support, he might have already posted two wins. He could certainly use similar success against the Red Sox, who hit .396 against him in two games last year, tagging him for 12 runs over 11 2/3 innings.

BOS: RHP Josh Beckett (0-1, 9.64 ERA)
The ace was far better than his stat line indicated in his first start back from the disabled list. Beckett simply tired in the fifth inning at Toronto and left with the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, only to have Manny Delcarmen surrender a grand slam to Frank Thomas. Beckett was charged with five runs and struck out six. In this one, he faces the Yankees, a team he is 4-3 against lifetime with a 6.56 ERA. This also marks Beckett's Fenway Park debut in '08. Last year at home, Beckett was 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA.

Tidbits
Rodriguez needs one home run to tie Willie McCovey and Ted Williams (521 each) for 15th place on the all-time list. ... A-Rod needs one homer to pass Bobby Murcer (175) for sole possession of 19th place in franchise history. He is also one run shy of 500 scored with the Yankees. ... In facing Beckett, the Yankees take on their 11th right-handed pitcher in 12 games this season. The Royals' John Bale is the only lefty starter they have faced this year, and they prevailed, 6-1.
