Pettitte (3-2)

Pitching matchup
DET: RHP Jeremy Bonderman (1-2, 4.28 ERA)
Bonderman had control problems for the second straight start last time out against the Rangers. He allowed two runs on two hits but walked seven. Bonderman has struggled against the Yankees, going 2-6 in nine starts with a 5.58 ERA. The right-hander owns a 1-3 record at Yankee Stadium. He has especially had problems against outfielder Johnny Damon, who has hit .438 (14-for-32) against him.

NYY: LHP Andy Pettitte (3-2, 3.23 ERA)
Pettitte's last start came unhinged in a troublesome fifth inning in which Cleveland scored four times. Pettitte recorded the first two outs easily, but then allowed two singles as his arm strength evaporated, then surrendered back-to-back homers to Jhonny Peralta and Franklin Gutierrez. Pettitte, who walked three and struck out three, noted that he was battling the after-effects of the flu bug that has circulated through the Yankees' clubhouse for weeks. Pettitte beat the Tigers on Aug. 1 at Yankee Stadium, hurling eight innings of one-run ball.

Tidbits
Curtis Granderson has reached base safely 15 times in 30 plate appearances since coming off the disabled list last week, but he's 0-for-7 in his career against Pettitte. Thus, he'll have Wednesday off in favor of Brandon Inge, who's 5-for-14 with three doubles off of Pettitte. ... The Yankees will be without Alex Rodriguez for the rest of the series and beyond. He is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list before Wednesday's game. ... Ivan Rodriguez stole his third base of the season on Tuesday, topping his total from all of last season.
