SEA: RHP Carlos Silva (3-0, 2.79 ERA)
The veteran workhorse has logged at least six innings in each of his six starts this season and ranks second on the team to Felix Hernandez in innings pitched with 42. Silva currently has a five-game winning streak, dating to his final two decisions with the Twins last season, but he has lost his past two outings against the Yankees, both at Yankee Stadium, where he has been rocked for nine earned runs in 9 1/3 innings.
NYY: RHP Darrell Rasner (2008 debut)
The 27-year-old right-hander, with 10 career starts on his resume, makes his season debut in the Yankees' finale with the Mariners. He was 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. His last big league start was against the Mets on May 19, 2007, when he suffered a broken right index finger and was placed on the disabled list for the remainder of the season. Last season, the Mariners tagged Rasner with a 3-0 loss at Safeco Field on May 11, five days after he beat them, 5-0, at Yankee Stadium.
Tidbits
If the first 31 games of the season mean anything, Silva should prepare to make do with minimal support. The Mariners have scored 94 runs in 192 1/3 innings this season for their starting pitchers, the 11th-worst run support in the American League. The Mariners are 5-2 this season in games in which their starter has allowed just one earned run, and they are 2-2 in games their starter has allowed no earned runs. ... Catcher Kenji Johjima had two hits in Saturday's loss, his first multihit game since he went 2-for-4 against the Athletics on April 16. Johjima had been in a 3-for-35 slump.
