Maria used her impressive serve to help her score her 1st win at the Australian Open today. Maria defeated Jelena Kostanic Tosic of Croatia 6-4 6-3 in 88 minutes to advance to round 2 to set up a mouthwatering clash against Lindsay Davenport of the United States.
In the 1st set, Maria took an early break in the 1st game and this 1 break was enough for Maria to take the set 6-4 when Maria pounded a short crosscourt forehand winner into the corner.
Maria broke Kostanic's serve to lead 3-2 in the 2nd set and broke again to take the set and the match when her opponent dumped a forehand into the net.
In round 2, Maria will play Lindsay Davenport who is playing only her 5th tournament since having a baby so is unseeded. Maria has played Davenport 5 times before and leads the series 4-1 although they have never played in Australia before. This match will be played on Tuesday.
